Division 3 League: Headford 2-9 Athenry 1-8

Our Intermediates finally registered their first 2 points of Div 3 at the fourth attempt. In a tight bruising encounter we came out on top against a dogged Athenry side on Saturday evening.

Missing no less than nine players that have played championship so far this season it looked a tall order for our lads, but we eventually ran out 4 point winners. Against a strong breeze in the first half we defended well and kept Athenry’s score to 5 points with 3 points for Headford, from Aaron McDonagh and Cathal Newell from play and Sean Meenaghan from a free. The second half was a complete battle and played at a high tempo. Athenry came out of the blocks and put pressure on our lads from the off with little joy. We then scored another point from Seán and from a pin point pass from Owen Carey, Niall Cunningham powered through and hit a pile driver to the corner of the net leaving the score 1-4 to 0-6. Athenry again took control and pushed ahead and with 12 minutes remaining led 1-7 to 1-5 our point coming from Cathal. Then the vital score of the game. A quick break out defence saw a well worked move fisted to the net by Aaron and points followed from Seán, Shane Walsh, Aaron and sub Niall Meenaghan with a score from distance to seal a well deserved win 2-9 to 1-8. Best on the day were Eoin McHugh and James O’Brien in defence, Owen Carey in midfield and Cathal Newell, Aaron McDonagh and Niall Cunningham up front.

Next up is Dunmore MacHales GAA in the league in the coming weeks. Thanks to all who came out to support.
