Division 5 League: Headford 3-7 | Corofin 2-10
Our Juniors rounded off the league with their second draw of the campaign vs Corofin last Friday evening in Headford.
With the prior knowledge that a win could have secured a league final place it was a somewhat frustrating result after what has been an excellent league performance for our second team in the highly competitive Division 5.
Before the game we struggled to field a team as there was a number of players injured or away.
Despite this we made an excellent start as midfielder Christy Day scored a point directly from the throw in. For the next 20 minutes we were the better side and led the game until there was a long stoppage due to an injury. Following this we lost our rhythm and in the 10 minutes to half time Corofin took full advantage to see them lead 1-7 to 2-6 at half time. Cathal Newell and Alan Bane both had 1-1 to their name at the break while David Hannon added his now customary score to the tally. Special mention to our keeper Neil Walsh who sailed over a beautiful 45′ during the first half also.
In the second half the game became tighter with scores at a premium. We were guilty of some wrong options and missed chances while Corofin were more economical in front of goal. They led by 3 points as we headed into the final 10 minutes of the game. However an Enda Hannon goal brought us right back in with a chance of taking the win before Cathal Newell pushed us 1 in front from a free. In the dying minutes we had chances to kill the game off but eventually after several minutes of added time the visitors found the equalizer with the final kick of the match. Best for us on the night were Christy Day at midfield and the energetic Cathal Newell who was involved in everything for us in attack.
We wish Geoffrey Corbett, Alan Bane & William Moggan speedy recoveries as they were all injured during the game.
The team and management now look to 2 weeks time when take on Cortoon Shamrocks in the first round of the Junior B Championship.
